Contrast is the ratio between the black and white parts within an image. The larger the contrast ratio of an HDTV (or any TV), the greater the difference between the brightest whites and the deepest blacks that TV can display. Therefore, a contrast ratio of 100,000:1 suggests that the black levels are 100,000 times darker than the white levels. But that’s where it should end for most of us–unless you watch everything in the dark, don’t get too caught up in big contrast numbers. They are largely there for show. The way your eye responds to contrast is really the important factor. The presence of even tiny amounts of ambient light in a room can make an HDTV display with a very high contrast ratio look similar to one with a much lower rating.

The plasma and LCD (liquid crystal display) televisions are the epitomes of the new TV – flat, thin, and vibrant. However, certain features set them apart from each other and a discerning buyer can see through the similarities and determine what product fits her/his needs.

Looks can be deceiving, and the difference between plasma and LCD screens is not an exception. The profiles of both TV types feature a thin contour and a flat screen – the significant aesthetic distinction they have compared to earlier models. Their disparity can be found in the machinery that is used. For the Plasma TV, gas plasma cells are charged in determined amount of electrical voltages in order to conjure a picture. On the other hand, the LCD TV produces images by charged liquid crystals that are pushed between two plates made of glass.

It is usually thought better to repair LCD parts than to replace them. The reasons are manifold. Monitors and terminals last over ten years. In the case of LCD screens, the lifetime is even longer. The malfunctioning of a tiny part can make a monitor redundant. If the main transformer or the tube fails, then replacing the entire TV is logical. If not, then repair is the cost-effective alternative. Terminals and monitors hold heavy metals that are potentially dangerous, so repairing is also a more environmental friendly thing to do. And, most importantly, repairing costs a lot less than the purchase of a new electronic component.
