HDTV for CW Games‎

Digitisation is the buzz word in all media circles and with Prasar Bharti set to stream the Commonwealth Games in High Definition, the DTH operators are readying themselves to provide these high end services.

“The Commonwealth Games may well be our deadline for the High Definition format,” said Ajai Puri, CEO of Airtel DTH.

Experts says with a basic set top box costing Rs 1,500-1,750, shelling out Rs 8000-10,000 for a HD set top box may be a high price to pay given that the number of channels that stream HD content are very few.

Currently Sun Direct is the only operator providing HD services.

Dish TV will launch the services in 3 months and the others will follow which would mean a higher investment for both operators and the consumers.

Companies may be gearing up to jump on to the HD bandwagon but the move by consumers is to watch for.

Many are saying that the Commonwealth Games may give a good push to digitize but will fall short in pulling in the numbers.
